If something happens at home and you don't feel safe, call 999. Call 101 if it’s less urgent. Never stay in a situation if it makes you feel unsafe.
We cannot provide emergency overnight or short term accommodation, but we can help and support you.
Immediate action to take
- Find out if there are any friends or family members you can stay with while you arrange a longer term solution
- Reach out to or your local Council for advice and support, for example
- Consider staying in a if you have nowhere to stay tonight.
- Check into a hotel at a discounted rate.

- Register for wellbeing support at the university if needed. If you need to talk to someone or want help to work out the right support for you, you can register and book an appointment with a Wellbeing Practitioner.
What happens when you tell us that you have a housing crisis
We will ask you questions about what happened and how we can help. Then we'll create an action plan to meet your needs.
We'll put you in contact with:
- our Student Support Advisers (SSA) or Residential Support Coordinators
- specialist help such as Wellbeing or Funding
- external emergency support.
You should consider whether you want to take a break from your studies while you find secure housing.
We'll talk you through our support processes if your situation needs it. These include as 'Break in Study', 'Withdrawal' or 'Capacity to Study.
You can also apply for the Hallam Hardship Fund if you have unexpected financial issues. You'll need to meet certain criteria and supply some documents to qualify.
Receiving support from the university
The University is not an emergency service, but we will do our best to support you so you can continue your studies.
You can help us help you by:
- contacting Hallam Help as soon as you become aware that there may be a problem, or if it gets worse
- booking an appointment with your SSA via Hallam Help if there is no immediate emergency
- proactively trying to resolve the situation by following up on any of the steps set out in your action plan
- staying in touch and keeping us updated – we're here to support you every step of the way.
