International Document Checking
All students with a nationality which is not British or Irish must both submit their immigration documents and attend an on-campus immigration document checking appointment.
Please note: This requirement is based on your nationality not fee status. Even if you have Home fee status (e.g. if you have settled or pre-settled status), if your nationality in your passport is not British or Irish, you must have your immigration documentation checked.
You will not be able to complete enrolment onto your course until we have verified your immigration documents and permission to study in the UK.
What do I need to do?
Document checking is a 3-stage process:
- You submit your immigration documents via the Immigration task.
- Once you have completed the online immigration task you will be emailed information about attending the face-to-face document checking event at City Campus.
- You attend an on-campus document checking event for final verification.
How do I access the Immigration task?
- Activate your IT account.
- Look out for your email sent from studentimmigrationcompliance@shu.ac.uk, which is sent to both your personal and Hallam email address.
- Use the link within this email to access the immigration task.
If you have an eVisa you will need to activate your eVisa account before completing this stage (you can learn more by ) and (this share code must begin with a letter ‘S’).
Once you have completed the immigration task on My Student Record you will receive an email with information about the face-to-face document checking event on campus. If you do not receive this within 3 working days, please email studentimmigrationcompliance@shu.ac.uk
When will the on campus event take place?
The on campus event will open at 9:30am on Tuesday 6 January. It will remain open 9:30am - 3:30pm on weekdays until Friday 23 January 2026.
You should attend the on campus event as soon as you can. No appointment is necessary, but please allow time for queuing.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Please bring your passport and any physical visa document if this applies to your situation.
If you do not hold a passport, please bring alternative photo ID such as a driver’s licence or national identity card.
Photos of your passport or visa will not be accepted.
You will also need to provide:
- Your UK address – this must be in writing so that you can show the person during your appointment.
- Your UK telephone number
I will not be arriving in Sheffield until the document checking event has ended. What should I do?
You must enrol before your course starts. The recommended enrolment date is 12 January 2026 and the deadline to enrol is 26 January 2026.
You must email enrolment@shu.ac.uk if you plan to arrive in the UK after your course start date. If you are given permission by the Enrolment team to arrive late, you will be contacted by the UKVI Compliance team with information on how to have your immigration documentation checked.
I had to send my passport away so I cannot bring it to the on campus immigration document checking event. What should I do?
You must bring evidence that you have sent your passport to another agency (such as UKVI or Student Finance England) to your appointment. Evidence may include a post office receipt and/or a letter from the agency requesting your original passport.
I have attended the on campus document checking event; however I am still not fully enrolled. What should I do?
You may have other outstanding requirements before you can complete your enrolment.
Please refer to the enrolment guidance for international students for further information.
I hold British or Irish nationality, but I have been asked to attend the immigration document checking event. Why is this?
We only invite students to have their documents checked based on the nationality we hold on record for each student. If your nationality is incorrect, you must send evidence of your British or Irish nationality (such as your passport or naturalisation certification) to studentimmigrationcompliance@shu.ac.uk.
Once we have reviewed your nationality evidence, we will then update the nationality on your record and confirm that you do not need to attend the document checking event.
