The University collaborated with the British Nutrition Foundation to host the conference, bringing together food and nutrition expertise to enhance food and nutrition education, led by academics and researchers from Sheffield Business School and the Advanced Food Innovation Centre (AFIC).

Food – a fact of life is the British Nutrition Foundation’s education programme for schools, run in partnership with the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

Organiser and AFIC research lead for Healthier Lives, Dr Caroline Millman, said: “As course leader of the Food Technical Professional apprenticeship at Sheffield Hallam, I welcome any opportunity to inspire teachers and celebrate the wonderful world of food and nutrition research and education – it’s a gift to be part of the career journey of so many talented young people. I am exhilarated by the success of the event!”

As part of the conference, teachers took part in a series of practical workshops to support them in delivering engaging and relevant food lessons in school. Workshop topics include sensory evaluation, new product development and functions of ingredients.

Elsa Healey, Senior Education Manager, AHDB said “We are proud to deliver hands-on and interactive conferences like this as part of the Food - a fact of life education programme. Events like these provide valuable development opportunities for teachers to deepen their understanding of sustainable food production and explore real-world examples that they can share with their pupils.”

Sheffield Hallam alumni who have since gone on to work at leading food companies, were in attendance showcasing career pathways in food to the conference delegates.

The Advanced Food Innovation Centre (AFIC), formerly the National Centre for Excellence in Food Engineering (NCEFE), drives problem-led, collaborative Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, Innovation, and Knowledge Exchange, delivering impactful solutions for sustainable and healthier food systems. With expertise in food engineering and state-of-the-art facilities, AFIC is a dynamic hub for Ï㽶ÊÓƵ’s multidisciplinary capabilities for food systems.
