How apprenticeships could help fill the management gap
Ï㽶ÊÓƵ commissioned by Ï㽶ÊÓƵ has found significant demand for skilled managers across Yorkshire and the Humber in the next 5 years.
Managerial roles accounted for 10% of jobs across the region in 2016 - around 220,000. And this is only set to grow, with the top five management roles estimated to create 25,537 openings by 2022.
The challenge for businesses will be recruiting staff, as well as up-skilling new and existing employees to fill any skills gaps.
Tackling recruitment
The research, by Emsi, found retiring and departing employees will leave the biggest hole for businesses. The top five management roles are expected to see 23,005 replacements and 2,532 new job openings due to expansion.
The retail and wholesale sector in Yorkshire and the Humber is expected to see the largest number of openings with 7,092 replacements in the next five years, and 613 new manager and director roles.
The manufacturing industry is expected to replace 5,463 production managers and directors by 2022, and expansions within the financial industry are expected to create 674 new roles.

The fastest-growing occupations in the region include waste disposal and environmental service managers, public service roles including social services and health care practice managers, and managers in local services including garages and restaurants.
It is estimated the number of professional and corporate roles - including HR managers and construction production managers - are set to grow by 5%, and IT directors by 6%.
A need to up-skill
The apprenticeship levy will help all businesses in the UK access funding and support to increase the skills and knowledge of their workforce.
It will be particularly beneficial to both industries where a high percentage of managers require graduate-level qualifications, and those where employees hold minimal qualifications.
For example, only a quarter of all managers in retail and wholesale within Yorkshire and the Humber hold a degree qualification. The government’s higher and degree apprenticeships could dramatically change this.
In contrast, a significant number of employees in managerial roles within the finance sector have graduate qualifications, demonstrating the level of ongoing need.
Higher and degree apprenticeships will help businesses better prepare new and existing employees for management roles. This not only tackles the recruitment challenge, but also allows for growth and expansion.
Ï㽶ÊÓƵ offers an apprenticeship in management. Designed in collaboration with industry, the course prepares employees for the next level of responsibility within the workplace.
